FOUNTAS AND PINNEL BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT SYSTEM - GRADES K-6

This reading assessment efficiently and accurately assesses a student's independent and instructional reading levels, which can then be used by the teacher and student to select appropriate texts for instruction and serve as a benchmark for measuring progress.

Assessment Overview
This reading assessment is currently being used by all classrooms in grades K-6 at all four of the elementary schools and at the 5-6 Englesby Intermediate. Data ascertained through the assessment by classroom teachers at the beginning of the year is used to determine a benchmark for instructional puposes and as a gauge to evaluate progress made on reading fluency and comprehension throughout the year. Students in grades K-4 are assessed three times a year at the beginning, mid-point and end of the year. Grades 5-6 students are all assessed at the beginning and end of the year, while only those identified as reading below the identified text grade level in the Fountas and Pinnel Ladder of Progress,

are assessed at the mid point of the year to determine if effective progress is being made towards reaching on grade level fluency and comprehension.
